Council News Today — October 21, 2026

As the federal government continues to navigate its operations and policies, a common thread of complexity and potential environmental impact emerges in today's headlines. Federal employees are expressing frustration over the limited top ratings in their performance evaluations, citing a system that is both rushed and complicated, leaving many in the dark about their own performance and opportunities for growth. Meanwhile, the State Department has issued an order to incorporate the phrase 'super intelligence' into all official communications, a move that may reflect a broader effort to emphasize the importance of advanced intelligence gathering and analysis in diplomatic efforts.

The intersection of government policy and environmental concerns is also on display in Texas, where a boom in data center development is raising concerns about the potential impact on air quality. After decades of progress in improving air quality, the rapid expansion of data centers in the state could potentially erase those gains, highlighting the need for careful consideration and planning in balancing economic development with environmental protection. As these stories unfold, they underscore the complex and often interconnected nature of government operations, policy, and their impact on the environment and the people they serve.
